The mobile web is growing. Today over 4 billion people have access to the internet through a mobile device. By 2020 a mobile device will be the primary internet connection and the only one for a majority of people.
However, most sites are not optimized for mobile. Websites that rely heavily on Flash or JavaScript are not compatible with most phones, including Blackberry and the iPhone. If customers cannot see your content, they will move on to the next business. That could really hurt your bottom line.
Also screen sizes vary. But the largest mobile phone screen is 240 x 320. That is significantly smaller than the average desktop screen which is 1024 x 768. So content that might look good on a large screen, may not translate well to a smaller screen. And if you have ever tried to navigate a large site on a small screen, you will know that horizontal scrolling is not fun.
Most websites are also heavy on graphics, which translates to large downloads in mobile. Downloading graphics on a phone can be quite expensive depending on your service.
Mobile websites are more lightweight than their traditional counterparts. But they also can incorporate other mobile technology- such as Click to Call, GPS, and SMS, which makes them quite handy for people on the go.
Many businesses are seeing the benefits of going mobile. Most of your favorite TV stations, Radio Stations, Newspapers, Restaurants, Airlines, and Retailers are already mobile. But smaller businesses can benefit from mobile as well, especially those who offer services like dentists, doctors, dry cleaners, maids, lawyers, and more.
Mobile has exploded in the last five years and is expected to continue. Are you ready for the mobile revolution?
