These days it seems like everyone is texting. We’ve come a long way since American Idol made it popular again. Companies are starting to see the benefits of texting as a means of staying in touch with their clients.
Texts are short snippets generally 140- 160 characters or less. There are several different types of texts that you can send (especially if you opt for a full-service provider). Here are some common texting campaigns that are good for small businesses: News/Info Alerts, Contests, Coupons/ Advertising.
Coupons and Advertising has been a big hit with consumers. Generally, people sign-up for coupon offers from their favorite vendors and receive coupons via their phone. No scissors required. When they want to redeem it they take it to the retailer and show them the text message.
Just remember the Mobile Marketing Association guidelines: Never Send Spam or unsolicited texts. Just like email you should build a opt-in list. This is easily accomplished with a simple web form where you can capture email addresses.
Think you can’t afford it? Think again. If you want to send general updates to a small list of contacts (less than 200) you can use a text blasting service.
Text blasting services most often require a license and a software install on your computer (generally PC running Windows XP or Vista). Fees can be monthly or based on the number of texts sent through the service. There are several services out there such as SMSCaster.com, but read the fine print and be sure what you are paying for.
So no more excuses – get texting!
